How come some cities r protected by their own police and others by the county sheriff.?
Q. Chicago is protected by the Chicago Police Department and Seattle is protected by the King County Sheriff.
Asked by asmara1115 - Wed Feb 4 15:38:47 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are some smaller cities that find it more economical to contract with the sheriffs department than to hire their own police. However, Chicago and Seattle are not examples of this. Chicago also falls under the jurisdiction of the Cook County Sheriff. Seattle also falls under the jurisdiction of Seattle PD.

Q. I have 2 uncles who were both arrested by a different county than that they live in OR the crime was committed in. There is no conflict of interest as well, so I don't need that as a possible answer. Many(including lawyers) have told us this was illegal. Does anyone else agree or know anymore about this??? please help?? We are trying to decide if we should take further action in investigating this. I have 2 uncles who were both arrested in Wise County(where the crime WAS committed in) by Russell County police. They were taken to Russell County court and then put in a Russell County jail. That doesn't seem right to me?? As does most everyone else who knows about this. One lawyer told us that it was illegal unless conflict of interest & if… [cont.]

A. Nothing like enough information. If an arrest warrant had been issued, then any police officer, anywhere in the country, could arrest them on it. If you want a more detailed answer, you'll have to tell us what actually happened. Richard

What is a VARIANCE issued by county commissioners?
Q. I have bought a property with the water well in the right-of-way of a private road. Does anyone know how I can resolve this issue without drilling a new well? Can I get a variance to reduce the right-of-way to get my well inside my property line? Any suggestions appreciated.
Asked by CoCoKauai - Fri Sep 28 20:26:55 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. What you have is an easement. You usually cannot retract an existing easement of way or necessity (the owners of the private road need access). Expansion of property lines is difficult to begin with, furthermore you would not be able to terminate the easement by transfer of ownership unless such transfer removed the need entirely. The right-of-way would still exist, yet on your property. What you don't want to do is take on any more taxes or liability. A variance means you are applying for an exception to the existing development code (generally). You have a grandfathered well so you aren't developing and if you were you might lose the rights. If you invert the property rights it could be seen in the converse as you have an easement… [cont.]

A. You'll have to contact each county separately and ask them. I'm sure some rural counties have no limits at all, but I doubt there is any overall listing available. Maybe check the ASPCA?

If i cannot pay my property taxes on time, will a lien issued by the county affect my chance of a HELOC ?
Q. I am having a problem paying my 4000 property tax bill for 2006. If the county puts a lien on my property(which the letter said they will do by august 31st) will this be a problem if i want to someday try to get a HELOC, or to refinance my mortgage.?
Asked by tp1260 - Mon Aug 27 01:13:03 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You will have trouble because the tax lien will be recorded on your credit as well. If you try to obtain a new HELOC the bank will run your credit and see the lien. At my bank we'll want evidence it is paid before we'll give you a loan. Or if it's an IRS tax lien and you're in a payment program we'll need proof. Also, we'll include that payment into your debt to income ratio. That might make it harder for you to qualify.

I want to find a comprehensive list of restaurants, bars and nightclubs by county. How do I do this?
Q. Is there one place that lists all restaurants/bars/nightclu bs? Yellowpages does not have everything, I don't need lots of details about these places, I just want to know names addresses and phone numbers.
Asked by Paul D - Sun Oct 12 20:28:20 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. has what you're looking for, though not as strong on the restaurant end of it, it's got 50,000 bars spread across all 50 states. Pick a state, drill down to county, pick a town, or enter a town by name or zip code and a mile radius that you want to search. It also lets you search for what's going on for the bars that have events listed.

How do you purchase tax lien properties in Michigan and what is the exact process? Does it vary by county?
Q. Our Sunday paper has three full sections listing properties with delinquent taxes. How do you purchase the property and what exactly are you buying?
Asked by Naomi O - Sun Nov 22 19:20:22 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This is not for novices nor for those feint of heart. Find someone who knows the ropes to teach you, preferably an individual who does this on a regular basis. If you don't know anyone then go to the tax collectors office and ask questions of the employees. They will be a good source of information and may even be able to point you to someone who has been successful in doing this. Good luck!

How do I find out if a certain business name has already been taken? Is exclusivity per county or by state?
Q. I want to do a fictitious business name statement, but I notice that the name that I want to use is being used by two different people in neighboring counties. It includes my family name. I need to find out if the name is being used in the area where I live, so I don't step on anyone else's toes. I assume that I can use the name in my county, IF it's not already taken, but I'm not sure. Is there some kind of online directory that I can check? Thanks for your help!
Asked by Delsi - Sat Oct 28 19:19:20 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. When you go to apply for your business license, they will enter the name you want to use into the computer, and the computer will tell you at that time if the name is available or not.

Q. Wanting to find which counties allow for 60 year olds to transfer their sold homes value to a newer home under prop 13. How to search this? Thanks!
Asked by customartist - Tue Jul 6 11:09:06 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Under state law all counties in California allow seniors to transfer their old (and lower) property tax assessment to be transferred to a new replacement residence within the same county. However, there are even some special arrangements between certain counties to allow you to transfer it to a neighboring county as well. The County Assessor in your county has all the details and they are quite willing to explain what applies to your case.

Q. I got divorced. I took the deeds to the court house my self ...still getting tax notices in joint or incorrect names.
Asked by chicks920 - Mon Oct 6 22:18:07 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It depends on the county. If you search for " appraisal district", you will find your county tax appraisal district where you should be able to search by owner name or address. for example in Hays county in TX: The problem is that sometime they are not up to date and it takes couple of weeks/months before they update their Internet site. The best thing to do is just call them directly (your county appraisal district) - they should be able to give you an answer right away.

Q. is it possible to find illinois county death records by address? or where i could find them, like a certain department in county records?
Asked by domepidemic - Mon Oct 1 21:58:26 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Of course your best bet would be to contact your local county clerk. But it might not give you what you want. Even if they listed deaths by address, chances are you will end up with a lot deaths listed for local hospitals and nursing homes. Depending on what you are looking for, searches of local newspaper databases might give you a better idea about specific addresses, although it certainly would not be all inclusive.
