History of the TermThe term is derived for the name of the state, Texas, which is in turn derived from the Spanish name for the once-Spanish province, Tejas. The Spanish took this name from a Caddoan word meaning "friends". Before the Texas War of Independence, Texas residents not of Hispanic descent were sometimes known as Texicans.
