An illustration is a visualization such as a drawing, painting, photograph or other work of art that stresses subject more than form. The aim of an illustration is to elucidate or decorate textual information (such as a story, poem or newspaper article) by providing a visual representation.

History

Early history

The earliest forms of illustration were prehistoric cave paintings. Before the invention of the printing press, books were hand-illustrated. Illustration has been used in China and Japan since the 8th century, traditionally by creating woodcuts to accompany writing.

15th century through 18th century

During the 15th century, books illustrated with woodcut illustrations became available. The main processes used for reproduction of illustrations during the 16th and 17th centuries were engraving and etching. At the end of the 18th century, lithography allowed even better illustrations to be reproduced. The most notable illustrator of this epoch was William Blake who rendered his illustrations in the medium of relief etching.

What is a good way to frame a painting done on illustration board?
Q. I have a painting that was done on illustration board. I need to frame it to be displayed in an exhibit, but I need some ideas. The painting is a few years old so the ends are getting bent etc, so in part I want to frame it to prevent future warping and damage, and also to exhibit it properly. It can't be too heavy either because the painting will be hung up on a simple 3sided partitions set up in a room.

A. well, you can simply matte and frame it...or just put it in a frame. If its an odd shape, I would matte it with a standard sized frame, and custom cut the window to fit. mattes are nice, they offer a nice 3-5in border. If the painting is on a standard size that you can get a frame of, try that and see how it looks. Either way, the edges and corners would get hidden by the matte or frame...best of luck!

A. An illustration is like drawing a picture. So draw a word picture of something, some place, or someone you know. Or something you do. Describe it, all about it. Like describe your house, or your mother, or your family, or your grandfather, or describe your pet. Whatever you like, describe that. Describe something you did with your friend, your pet, or your mom, that was nice, or scary, or funny, or comforting, or sad. In your story tell where you were, what the sky looked like, or the room you were in, etc... You get the picture? Illustrate it with words.

What jobs can I get out doing an Animations and Illustration degree?
Q. I want to do an Animation and Illustration course in uni but I'm not sure what career choices I will have afterwards... A lot of my family and friends say that being an illustrator won't be enough for a career and it is really difficult to become a really successful animator/illustrator for films/games etc. Is it difficult? What other possible jobs are there? Thankyou! (: the question should say out *OF doing ^_^

A. You can get work in two major areas: - Directly where you work on animations/illustration. This would usually be with a studio or an advertising agency. The jobs here are very limited. - Indirectly, where you apply the skills you learn to other industries. For example, you could work in design, or in the computing industry (web site design, user interface design)
