A university is an institution of higher education and research, which grants academic degrees in a variety of subjects. A university is a corporation that provides both undergraduate education and postgraduate education. The word university is derived from the Latin universitas magistrorum et scholarium, roughly meaning "community of teachers and scholars."

History

Definition

Representation of a university class in the 1350s

The original Latin word "universitas" was used at the time of emergence of urban town life and medieval guilds, to describe specialized "associations of students and teachers with collective legal rights usually guaranteed by charters issued by princes, prelates, or the towns in which they were located." The original Latin word referred to degree-granting institutions of learning in Western Europe, where this form of legal organization was prevalent, and from where the institution spread around the world. For non-related educational institutions of antiquity which did not stand in the tradition of the university and to which the term is only loosely and retrospectively applied, see ancient centers of higher learning.

What university is good to attend if you are seeking to obtain a psychiatry degree?
Q. Okay, my first choices for undergraduate are: Princeton UCLA Duke NYU Boston University And my choices for Graduate are: Johns Hopkins UCLA Are these good universities or do I need to change them? Any advice? Thank you! Yeah, yea dawg, I'm a freshman in high school, and Princeton has been my dream since I was 5. So, yeah, I think I have a shot. PS: I'm #8 in my class with a GPA of 4.1 and an IQ of 128. What now, bitches???

A. These are good choices. Just score high on SAT and have a GPA higher than 4.3 if you want to compete well. They don't care about your IQ unless you're in MENSA (like me). And as for Princeton, you'll either need to be filthy rich or distinguish yourself like submitting an academic paper in a journal, winning lots of awards, etc.

What university course is necessary to become an airline pilot?
Q. I am 16 years and old and studying Maths, Physics and Geography at AS in sixth form. I've been wanting to become an airline pilot for a number of years now, I'm aware of the requirements in terms of training I need and eyesight etc, but what university course is best to study if any? It would be great if you could tell me the best universities for that course and entrance requirements also. Thanks in advance. I live in England so a course in England would be preferable.

A. You can get a pilot's license with almost any degree. That said, it is very expensive, and hard to get the flight hours. The two places to consider for college would be Embry-Riddle and the US Air Force Academy (where they will also fix your eyes so you can fly). Embry-Riddle is expensive and the Air Force Academy, while free, gives you a commitment to the Air Force afterwards. Air Force ROTC and OTS is similar to the academy, but the odds of getting a pilot slot aren't as good. If neither of those things work for you, then you can try to get a private pilot license, but it is a lot harder to get hired anywhere. EDIT: Wasn't aware that you were from England when I originally posted. That said, I would presume the best way t do so in… [cont.]

Is a university education still a dividing line between the proletariat and the well bred?
Q. I have just been listening to Billy Joel's "The Longest Time" in which he is reminiscing about his high school days. The video is overwhelmingly vulgar and reeks of lower class sentimentality. I cannot imagine such a vid being made in a university graduation setting. But that was in the past. Do proletarians now proceed to university? And where is the last refuge of the genteel classes?

A. Apparently the proletariat's don't know what proletariat means.
